Tomatoes may sound odd in a cocktail, but it isn’t the first time I’ve shaken up a beverage with tomatoes that I absolutely love. This is my vibrant take on an Alcohol Free Margarita that is shaken with tomato, fresh strawberry, lime and cayenne! Want to make more delicious tomato cocktails at home? As I mentioned, this isn’t a new concept for LC. It first started off with the Mexican Cesar, which ended up having Chicharron and Mango. Then I made something very special for the ladies on CTV’s The Social, and again, another winner. Now I wanted to make this beverage approachable, so I avoided using any make shift 0-Tequila or Agave. I decided to keep this clean and easy(ish). With this cocktail, I threw in a splash of water to help provide a bit more volume because it was needed. Then with the combo of fresh Strawberries, citrus and Cayenne, this drink really came together.
If you’re still weirded out by the Tomato concept, just think about the most popular tomato cocktail…The Caesar! If you’re like me who LOVES fresh tomatoes, you’re going to fall in love with this beverage. Before we go into the recipe though, let me go over a few more points!
Choosing Your Tomatoes
I’d go with a sweeter variety when it comes to tomatoes. I also wanted to use a Tomato that would be easy to muddle and not just pop everywhere and get some inevitable stains. So I went with a Vine Tomato here. Mind you, tomato season is well over right now in Toronto. Therefore, if you’re reading this in the summer time and have a lot more options available, try it! See what you like and experiment!
Agave Syrup
Agave syrup is readily available now in supermarkets, so this should be a fairly easy find. I would really do my best to stick to Agave for this one, since this Margarita is missing Tequila. At least with the Agave Syrup, one element of that spirit is there!
Why Cayenne?
So the Cayenne does two things for me. For one, I like having a bit of heat in a cocktail myself. Secondly, the cayenne almost has that bite you get from a Tequila. It’s warming, which is exactly what a spirit does, without the obvious effects of alcohol. You don’t need much for it to go a long way. Just ensure you add it while muddling the tomatoes for this tomato cocktail, you add a pinch of cayenne to allow the juice to soak up all the flavours.
What if I want alcohol?
That’s cool too! I would remove the water added to this cocktail, and shake 1.5 oz of a nice Blanco Tequila. Increase the sugar a touch too. It will go a long way.
