Todays #LCFeature mixes up with a fellow Canadian that I absolutely love. This was her cocktail for World Whisky Day that I am very excited to share!
The Drinkstagram community is fairly small in the Canadian Market, especially for those in Ontario. Thankfully, I ‘insta-met’ Debbie of @Recipesbydebbie and she shares the same enthusiasm of our nations unique spirits.
For Whisky Day, we both decided to feature Canadian Whiskies, because our nation has A LOT to offer when it comes our spirits. We’re not limited to as many rules when it comes to Whisky production (vs Bourbon for example), which is why you’ll find such unique Canadian Products. Some aren’t touched by a barrel, or they’re filtered through to create a crystal clear product. We also have a bit of flexibility when it comes to what grains to work with, so that every region has its own unique blend representing them.
This particular cocktail Debbie showcased is a riff on an Old Fashioned, and I gotta say, the flavours are spot on. You have the famous Crown Royal Whisky (which if you haven’t picked up their northern harvest, you don’t know what you’re missing), Calvados with Sweet Vermouth and Maple Syrup. This was created by the team at Delta Toronto, which is literally across the street from me, so I will have to pop in for a sip. But what I love about this, is that it’s simple to recreate and why I love Debbie’s account. They’re simple, approachable, yet delicious cocktails you can make at home. Thanks so much for tagging Liquid Culture in this cocktail!
Now I did want to mention a couple of the ingredients that were switched. For the Maple Syrup, I used Kinsip Barrel Aged Maple Syrup and I tend to always gravitate towards Dolins Sweet Vermouth above all else. I also have to admit that I don’t LOVE luxardo cherries. I find them much too sweet, and I always ask for my Manhattans with an orange peel, hence why I used a peel here instead…plus I don’t have Luxardo cherries around the house!
Remember, if you want to be featured on my socials, simple tag #LCFeature or Liquid Culture to any cocktail bottle or recipe you want me to recreate.
