Learn the HOW-TO Guide on Rum Punch

When it comes to the classic Rum Punch, you will find a ton of variations and for good reason. To build a proper Rum Punch, the saying goes as such: 1 part Sour, 2 parts Sweet, 3 parts Rum, 4 parts Weak. With this recipe / ratio in mind, you can build Rum Punches of all different flavours and offerings. And truly, this ratio has worked for me without fail and has given me the best recipes so far. That’s why I want to share how I break down each category, what is used and HOW-TO build the perfect Rum Punch. This HOW-TO Guide to Rum Punch will give you the flexibility and creativity to build for any palate and taste! Now let’s dive into it!

The Ratio to REMEMBER

I know I mentioned it in the intro, but it’s important that this is broken down again in BOLD.

1 Part Sour
2 Parts Sweet
3 Parts Rum
4 Parts Weak

With this ratio, the possibilities are virtually endless. It can almost feel overwhelming, so I’m going to break down each of these sections and offer my suggestions on what best to use.

SOUR

This is probably one of the easiest to decide, and I almost always use Lime. This represents the “sour” component to your cocktail, and I always like to keep one thought in mind when creating cocktails; What grows together, goes together. With lime being plentiful and always used around the Islands, this is why I lean towards Lime.

Now where you can be flexible is if your coming in with a different concept or theme for your Punch. Say you want a bright, pink, Rum Punch. That’s when I’d say, bring out the Grapefruit, and in the “weak” ratio of the Rum Punch, use a Grapefruit Soda. Please note, Grapefruit Soda’s are not traditional to use in a Rum Punch, but the punch calls for flexibility and ease and I want you to have fun with it! Think about what you want from the cocktail, the theme, what’s available and what’s on hand, and build from there!

SWEET

Now this Ratio calls for TWO parts Sweet, which may seem excessive, but I want to tell you why you shouldn’t shy away from Sweet here and other options available. First off, Rum Punches are heavy in Spirit (aka Rum). With that much Rum volume, you do NEED sugar to balance it out. The thing is, you don’t have to use just Sugar in this case. It can be in the form of a juice, say Coconut Water / Milk that are naturally sweeter, or Guava Juice (yes it has a touch of acid, but is more sweet over all).

You can also use an all sugar component, such as a simple syrup for your Rum Punch. It’s pretty much what I do for the classic I create below, but even there, you have so many options! You can use Honey, use Agave, use Demerara or Brown Sugar. The important thing to note here is that I create a syrup that is 1:1. This means I use 1 part Sugar with 1 part Water. If I did a Rich Simple Syrup that uses more sugar, than that would affect the overall ratio. YOU CAN, but it just changes everything and you’ll have to adjust appropriately. For ease, 1:1 is always best and it’s simple to create in a flash.

RUM

This may seem simple. It simple states Rum. Here’s the thing, Rum is so vast and you can blend a ton of different types, that it isn’t as simple as you may think. When choosing which Rums to build your Rum Punch, I’d stick to the ones who have avoided adding any additives and/or colouring, flavours, etc. That’s pretty much my ethos for all spirits, but with Rum, it’s especially important. For my Rum Punches, I gravitate towards the Rums from Barbados, St Lucia or Jamaica. You can create some really unique stuff with their taste profile. I avoid the Spanish-Style Rums here, but I wouldn’t say they’d be bad! I just love the body and robust taste that Barbados and Jamaica provide that’s truly unique.

I’d avoid too much of the Spiced Rums as well, unless it’s layered with another Rum (kind of what I do with the Recipe below). And depending on the complimenting flavours and theme, will determine which ones you should use. AKA Lighter Rum Punch like the Grapefruit one I mentioned above, could benefit from a lighter-aged Rum.

Weak

WEAK? What does Weak mean? They’re typically referring to a liquid that is NOT alcoholic, that will lengthen the Rum Punch which is VERY NECESSARY to balance out your entire cocktail. Weak can mean simply water! Yup, that’s right. Adding Water to the cocktail and it’s super important for the balance. Ice does the same thing to a cocktail, it dilutes and in the right vessel and measures, helps balance and complete the whole cocktail experience. I’m a big advocate for a glass full of ice. If it isn’t full, it’s not right.

In this cocktail below, I use Water and Pineapple Juice, but you really have ALL the flexibility. Think of Iced Tea, Sodas, Juices. Anything and everything is on the table, and choosing THIS component tends to guide the rest of the cocktail and how you build your Rum Punch.

HOW-TO Build your Rum Punch

Now that I broke down all the parts, I share a few tips in terms of how to put this Rum Punch together for the ultimate success!

What I love about a Rum Punch is that you can build a batch EASILY and have it done earlier on that day. I typically don’t love to create these cocktails longer than 24 hrs in advance because the citrus component, especially if you’re using Lime, will change the taste of the cocktail. Also, always have some classic Angostura Bitters in hand. Especially for those robust Rum Punches, it lends a bit of spice to tie in all the flavours and it’s pure perfection.

The most important final note is that with this ratio, there is flexibility, and you should experiment and build it to your preference! Some flavours, sweeteners or juices used may cover two or more different “categories”. For example, Guava juice can act as part of the “Sweet” and “Weak” Component. So it’s important to be mindful and playing chemist sometimes with a Rum Punch.
